Type Trumps - A Concept

How type design affects the legibility and readability of text.

A typographic design intended to test and compare the legibility of typefaces.

This project started with various tests between two typefaces, both of which are generally seen as being highly legible with a high level of readability.  I was particularly interested in studying the varying defining features of each typeface and how they benefited or worked against the overall legibility and readability. The research and explorations were then used to inform a game in which players could interact with tests and learn about what makes a typeface functional.

The front of the packaging presents the flipped/rotated legibility issue of the b, d, p and q. The Didot d provided a finish to the design that other serif typefaces could not achieve.

The Leaflet

The leaflet provides type specimens of the typefaces included in the gameplay, instructions, notes on the scoring system and some diagrams of the features mentioned throughout the game for context and appeals.
The Cards

30 cards in total consist of 6 type classifications (serif, sans-serif, monospace, diodone and display) with 5 typefaces in each classification showcasing a legibility test (blurring, waterfall, crowding, contrast, perspective).
